Engine Beds - Overview

The engine beds bear the weight of the engine and transmit the thrust from the propeller to the hull. They can be made from laminated timber, hardwood, steel, aluminum or fibreglass or a combination thereof.
The beds need to be strong enough to keep the engine where is was installed when you're upside down in the Roaring Forties, waiting to see if you're going to roll the right way up.
They need to be stiff enough to prevent the engine from flexing as you pound your planning hull across the wave tops. I kid you not, that large lump of cast iron can be working its butt off!
Even with flexible mounts, soft beds will cause vibration.

The bed is the base, if you need to adapt the engine or the beds to suit, always adapt the beds!

These engine beds look great, laminated, additionally stiffened by the angle iron and about to be glassed into place. Note the dummy engine, made with plywood, to get the positioning right. Pretty good job for a first timer!
