Transmission (Gearbox) Codes and Information
Most Yanmar's have a Kanzaki transmission
fitted however some models (4JH3/4JH4/4LHA/6LPA/6LY) are supplied with
ZF Hurth or Twin Disc transmissions depending on model. Most engine
models have various transmission options, Discuus with your dealer
the most suitable unit for your particular requirements.
V-drive models are not sold in all global markets (not sold the UK
market).

CAUTION: When checking the transmission
oil quantity, sit the dipstick on the threads regardless of model, do
not screw it in.
SD20/31 do not run before dipping otherwise oil may
be aerated which can be misleading, looking as if oil is emulsified.
Twin Disc models check oil level with engine idling.
Hurth hydraulic models run engine then dip immediately after
stopping.

**** CAUTION SD40/SD40-T units: The maximum
oil level should be re-marked on the dipstick 35mm above the current
maximum marking and the oil level should be maintained as near to the
maximum as possible (but not higher). This change in oil level is the
subject of Yanmar technical bulletin MSB 03-017 (click
for .pdf diagram). The oil is best pressure filled from the external
drain or internal filler hole using MerCruiser gear oil pump or similar
device. Oil can be pumped out & re-filled afloat from inside the
boat. I only recommend the use Quicksilver High Performance gear Lube
which is available from Yanmar Power centres, Mercury & Mercury
MerCruiser Dealers and certain handlers.
# These models can have a stiff/heavy gear selection& vague neutral
selection use "Morse Supreme" or equivalent low friction
33c type cables
CAUTION Hydraulic gearboxes require additional
oil for the remote mounted oil cooler so the quantity required may
vary. This cannot be calculated until the unit is completely installed.
