Yanmar Pleasure Boat Marine Engine Help

Calculate the Front Power Takeoff

The majority of installations only drive a freezer compressor or an extra alternator. When the alternator is bigger than the one supplied with the engine or the freezer becomes a fridge, freezer and chiller, check the allowable takeoff power of the front PTO.

First, you need to know the distance between the front face of the crankshaft pulley and the center of load of the PTO pulley. Have a look a the drawing below.

Each individual pulley has a different overhang distance (L), you need to measure it.

Caution: Some high performance engines only allow a single ' V ' belt.
( 4JH3-TE/HTE/DTE, 6LP-UTE/STE (P), 6LY2-STE ) Don't exceed the load limits!

To work out the allowable takeoff horsepower (A type only), e.g. from the 2GM20 graph below, where the graphed horsepower (ghp) is 6hp at 3600rpm.

USE THE FORMULA:
( M / L+ N )ghp = allowable takeoff horsepower
Note: M and N are constants for the 2GM20.

where L = 25mm M = 91, and N = 66 then

(91 / 25+66)6 = 6hp at 3600rpm

If we used a pulley with the max distance 'L' of 60mm, the allowable takeoff horsepower will be:
(91 / 60+66)6 = 4.3hp at 3600rpm

CAUTION: the factors L, M, N and ghp are different between engine models, carefully check the applicable graph!
