Yanmar Pleasure Boat Marine Engine Help
Raw water
' RAW ' water is the fluid that the boat floats in. Most commonly salt water, often fresh and sometimes stuff like sewage!! The purpose of this small page is to help those poor souls that forget to turn on the seacock or who have a water stoppage.
If you have a busy brain that sometimes forgets to turn on the raw water before starting the engine I recommend putting the engine key on the seacock. You then have to see the cock before starting the engine. ( I hope something twigs at that point! )
When the engine starts, check the water flow from the exhaust or water outlet point. If you cant actually see it you can probably hear it. The water should exit within 30 seconds or so after startup. ( This will depend on the length of the exhaust pipe. )
If the exhaust is such that you can't see or hear it I suggest fitting a gizzmo called an 'AQUA-ALARM' which sounds an alarm if the water stops flowing.
If the water stops flowing while motoring, especially in an aft cockpit vessel, the sound from the exhaust will change and you will instinctively know something is not OK.
